In the heart of Florida, the Rucks family continues a proud tradition of dairy farming, operating the Milking R Dairy and Sutton Milk with dedication and innovation. Sutton Rucks, alongside his brother Garrett, leads the family business that has evolved into a multifaceted operation, including not only dairy farming but also direct-to-consumer sales of ice cream, milk, and beef. Milking R Dairy milks about 1,500 cows, grows its own haylage, and runs a commercial beef cow operation, making it a cornerstone of the local agricultural community.

Seeking Assurance and Flexibility with Nedap SmartTag Ear
As the Rucks family expanded their dairy operations, they sought technology that could provide reassurance and flexibility in managing their large herd. “What drew us to the Nedap SmartTag Ear was we were looking for some reassurance and flexibility on our farm,” Garrett explains. “We do a lot of things around here at the farm, and we wanted to make sure that each cow that was in heat or had a problem is being addressed on time and correctly.” The decision to implement Nedap SmartTag Ear technology was driven by the need to streamline daily operations, especially in monitoring cow health and heat detection. Sutton highlights the ease this technology brought to their routine, stating, “Every morning we go in there and check health data and cows in heat, put them in the sort gate, sort them out, and do what needs to be done to them correctly.”
Improving Efficiency and Reducing Labor with Technology
One of the major advantages the Rucks family found with the SmartTag Ear was the reduction in labor and the ability to manage their cows more effectively. “If there’s anything I can bring to this farm that helps my employees, it is when my guys can get here to the farm and pull a list of cows that need some attention. You know, only eight cows, instead of having to go through a fresh pin of 110, 120 cows. The Nedap Ear tag system helps bring that to the forefront for our team to address those cows and get them back on track,” Sutton shares. Garrett also appreciates the user-friendliness of the system: “What I like best about the SmartTag Ear is the ease of use. It’s easy to install, easy to use. It’s easy to show employees how to use it, and they can go on their cell phone, you have on-time data, they can look up any cow at any time.” This ease of use has not only made day-to-day tasks more efficient but also improved the farm’s overall productivity.
Enhancing Herd Health and Sustainability
The integration of the Nedap SmartTag Ear has led to noticeable improvements in the herd’s health and productivity. Garrett notes, “With the SmartTag Ear we’ve been able to improve our conception rates. We want to keep healthier cows in the herd, which ultimately means more milk in the bulk tank. Our goal moving forward with the Nedap SmartTag Ear system is addressing issues before they become a bigger problem. We want to keep that cow in our herd as long as we can. Longevity pays, reproduction pays, and everything ties together to be a profitable farm.”
The Rucks family views the adoption of this technology as a step towards a more sustainable and responsible farming operation. Sutton emphasizes, “Technology that helps us farmers become more efficient, that’s the whole story when it comes to sustainability issues. When we can say we use 65% less water to make a certain amount more pounds of milk, I mean that’s a huge story for the dairy industry and it’s companies like Nedap that help us do that and it’s a good story.”
A Step Forward in Modern Dairy Farming
For the Rucks family, the Nedap SmartTag Ear system has proven to be an invaluable tool in enhancing the efficiency, productivity, and sustainability of their dairy operation. As Sutton puts it, “I tell everyone that comes here, my job is as a farmer, I don’t give a darn if we have a calf here for two days or if we have a cow here for 20 years, I want to give them the best possible life we can. And the Nedap system I think is just a step that helps us identify those cows quicker and be able to tell our consumers we’re using everything in our toolbox we possibly can to keep our cows happy and healthy.”
With a commitment to innovation and animal welfare, the Rucks family continues to set a high standard in the dairy farming industry, leveraging technology to ensure their cows are well cared for and their business thrives.
