Sutton Rucks, alongside his brother Garrett, leads the family business that has evolved into a multifaceted operation, including not only dairy farming but also direct-to-consumer sales of ice cream, milk, and beef. Milking R Dairy milks about 1,500 cows, grows its own haylage, and runs a commercial beef cow operation, making it a cornerstone of the local agricultural community.

Garrett notes, “With the SmartTag Ear we’ve been able to improve our conception rates. We want to keep healthier cows in the herd, which ultimately means more milk in the bulk tank. Our goal moving forward with the Nedap SmartTag Ear system is addressing issues before they become a bigger problem. We want to keep that cow in our herd as long as we can. Longevity pays, reproduction pays, and everything ties together to be a profitable farm.”

Sutton emphasizes, “Technology that helps us farmers become more efficient, that’s the whole story when it comes to sustainability issues. When we can say we use 65% less water to make a certain amount more pounds of milk, I mean that’s a huge story for the dairy industry and it’s companies like Nedap that help us do that and it’s a good story.”

And the Nedap system I think is just a step that helps us identify those cows quicker and be able to tell our consumers we’re using everything in our toolbox we possibly can to keep our cows happy and healthy.”
