For Mosgiel farmers Rosie and Cody Cowley, investing in technology has been about making their system more manageable, while giving them greater control over both their time and their herd.

Running 620 cows, the couple carefully assessed a range of collar options before choosing Nedap. For them, it wasn’t just
about functionality, but long-term practicality.

A key factor was the ability to purchase the collars outright, rather than commit to ongoing lease costs. Combined with a longer expected hardware lifespan than other options, it gave them confidence they were making a sound investment for the future.

Since introducing Nedap, the day-to-day impact has been clear, particularly during mating. 

 
Previously, heat detection meant long hours in the milking shed for Cody, carefully watching for signs and trying not to miss key moments. Now, that responsibility is shared more effectively across the farm. 

This level of visibility becomes even more valuable during challenging conditions. During a recent major weather event, when cow movement naturally increased, the system’s herd correction feature ensured the data remained accurate. By adjusting for overall herd behaviour, it prevented false heat signals and allowed operations to continue as normal.

Over mating, the time savings have been just as noticeable.

With less manual observation required, Cody now has more freedom in the mornings and on weekends. It has given the family greater flexibility, whether that is spending time together or stepping away from the farm when needed, without feeling tied to being there at all times.

For Rosie and Cody, the shift has been about more than just efficiency.

By improving how they use data across heat detection, animal health and daily management, they have created a system that
supports both their farm performance and their lifestyle.

It is a practical approach that gives them confidence in their decisions, while making the farm easier to run day to day.
